Vintage Hmong Skirt Vietnam - Lace Trim

This skirt was made in Vietnam by members of the indigenous Hmong tribe using hand embroidered hemp cloth, ribbons traditional batik work & lace trim. Measures 8' wide including ties by 2' long some wear and tear due to age and use. Hmong women can take up to a month when making a skirt. The skirts are considered a reflection of a woman's character & skill so decorations are chosen carefully. There is a legend among the Vietnamese Hmong that once the earth was very large and the sun very small so in order for the sun to shine on all of it, the earth shrunk. As it shrunk it wrinkled creating all the mountains and valleys. This is the reason the Hmong skirts are pleated to reflect the world around them. It is said that without a pleated skirt a Hmong woman is not dressed to meet her ancestors in the afterlife.
